The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by 3M (MMM) 93.24 (-2.98%), Verizon (VZ) 41.28 (-2.25%) and Coca Cola (KO) 58.91 (-1.57%).

The VIX closed Wednesday at 13.14 (+4.70%) and the 10 YR at 4.169 (-0.24%). The VIX is currently at 13.07 (-0.53%). The 10YR is at 4.131 (-1.15%).

Today, the gross domestic product data showed the U.S. economy grew at a rate of 3.3% in the fourth quarter. That’s much higher than the 2% expectation from economists.

The price index for personal consumption expenditures rose 2.7% on an annualized basis, down from 5.9% a year prior. So-called core PCE, which excludes food and energy, increased by 3.2%, down from 5.1%.

IBM (IBM) rallied 7% after topping Wall Street’s fourth-quarter estimates.

Unemployment insurance weekly claims in the week ending January 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 214,000, an increase of 25,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up by 2,000 from 187,000 to 189,000. The 4-week moving average was 202,250, a decrease of 1,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 500 from 203,250 to 203,750. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending January 13, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending January 13 was 1,833,000, an increase of 27,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 1,806,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,835,000, a decrease of 13,250 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 1,848,000 to 1,848,250. The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending January 6 was 2,148,140, an increase of 17,359 from the previous week. There were 1,935,736 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2023.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.6 cents at $3.102 per gallon.
