The Dow stock winners Tuesday were led by Disney (DIS) 93.05 (+2.99%), Verizon (VZ) 39.29 (+1.89%) and Home Depot (HD) 358.43 (+0.76%).

The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Boeing (BA) 200.52 (-7.89%), Nike (NKE) 101.72 (-3.18%) and Chevron (CVX) 143.69 (-2.43%).

The VIX closed Tuesday at 13.84 (+4.45%) and the 10 YR at 4.061 (+2.81%). The VIX is currently at 14.78 (+6.79%). The 10YR is at 4.098 (+0.79%).

This morning stocks fall amid fears that the Federal Reserve could ease monetary policy more slowly than expected.

Retail sales data for December came in stronger-than-expected, indicating a resilient consumer and putting aggressive rate cuts from the Federal Reserve into doubt. Retail sales were up 0.6% for November and gained 0.4% month-over-month excluding autos. Economists had estimated a 0.4% month-to-month increase in retail sales and 0.2% ex-autos.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.6 cents at $3.088 per gallon.
