The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to be down -64 points.

Thursday the Dow closed up +322.35 (+0.87%) at 37,404.35.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +12.84%.

Thursday, (28) Dow stocks were up, none were at 52-week lows and (2) were at 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Thursday were led by Intel (INTC) 47.08 (+2.88%), Salesforce (CRM) 27.25 (+2.69%) and Walgreens (WBA) 26.06 (+2.60%).

The Dow stock losers Thursday were Cisco (CSCO) 49.70 (-0.20%) and Apple (AAPL) 194.68 (-0.08%).

The VIX closed Thursday at 13.65 (-0.15%) and the 10 YR at 3.906 (+0.28%). The VIX is currently at 13.77 (+0.88%). The 10YR is at 3.857 (-0.98%).

A gauge the Federal Reserve uses for inflation rose slightly in November and edged closer to the central bank’s goal. The core personal consumption expenditures price index, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 0.1% for the month, and was up 3.2% from a year ago, the Commerce Department reported Friday. Economists had been expecting respective increases of 0.1% and 3.3% respectively.

Durable goods orders, which include long-lasting items such as airplanes and appliances, ticked up 5.4% higher in November, beating the 2% estimate given by economists. This comes on the heels of a 5.1% decline in October. Excluding a sharp rise in transportation, new orders only increased 0.5%. However, excluding defense, new orders actually rose 6.5%. Transportation equipment let the increase in the overall figure.

Nike (NKE) shares tumbled 12.1% after the athletic retailer cut its sales guidance and announced plans to pull back costs by around $2 billion.

U.S. futures are mostly higher, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up nine-tenths of a cent at $3.129 per gallon.

Nike (NKE) reported earnings on 12/21/23 after the close with $1.03, beating estimates of $0.839 per share.

JPMorgan (JPM) reports earnings on 1/12/24 before the open.
