Disney (DIS) fourth-quarter earnings topped expectations when it released results after the market close on Wednesday, but revenue came up short. The entertainment giant said it saw a decline in ad revenue, primarily from Disney’s ABC Network and other owned TV stations. It also plans to expand its cost-cutting measures by an additional $2 billion. Disney also said it gained 7 million new Disney+ subscribers from the previous quarter, upping its total users to $150.2 million. Analysts had anticipated a total of 148.15 million subscribers for the period. The company reported adjusted earnings of 82 cents per share, topping the 67 cents expected. Revenue came in at $21.24 billion and slightly behind the $21.33 billion expected. Shares are up about 4%.
Initial filings for jobless benefits declined slightly last week and were just below estimates. Jobless claims for the week ended Nov. 4 totaled 217,000, a drop of 3,000 from the previous period and a touch under the consensus forecast for 220,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, totaled 1.834 million, an increase of 22,000 and above the estimate for 1.819 million.
Later today, Fed chief Powell will speak at an IMF Annual Research Conference in Washington D.C. Powell is a part of the policy panel that will discuss monetary policy challenges in the global economy.
U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
The national average price of gasoline is down four-tenths of a cent at $3.401 per gallon.
