The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +42 points.

Tuesday the Dow closed up +366.58 (+1.06%) at 34,951.93.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +5.44%.

Tuesday, (21) Dow stocks were up, none were at 52-week lows and (2) were at 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Tuesday were led by Microsoft (MSFT) 359.49 (+3.98%), UnitedHealth (UNH) 500.00 (+3.29%) and Goldman Sachs (GS) 337.27 (+3.08%).

The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Honeywell (HON) 205.25 (-1.40%), Visa (V) 240.77 (-1.32%) and Coca Cola (KO) 60.57 (-0.39%).

The VIX closed Tuesday at 13.30 (-1.34%) and the 10 YR at 3.765 (-0.58%). The VIX is currently at 13.13 (-1.28%). The 10YR is at 3.758 (-0.77%).

The Dow notched a seventh straight positive session on Tuesday for its longest string of gains since March 2021.

Goldman Sachs (GS) stock declined 0.3% after Goldman Sachs missed expectations in its second-quarter earnings. The company posted earnings of $3.08 a share, lower than the forecast of $3.16 per share. Goldman also reported revenue of $10.9 billion, which was more than the expected $10.84 billion.

Housing starts tumbled by 8% in June while building permits fell 3.7% as the industry continues to play catch-up with demand. The total seasonally adjusted starts of 1.44 million were less than the 1.48 million Dow Jones estimate, though the percentage drop was less than the 9.3% forecast from May numbers that were revised sharply downward. Permits were projected to decline 0.7%.

Microsoft (MSFT) shares closed at a record high Tuesday after the tech giant released higher prices for its new artificial intelligence subscription service, called Copilot, for Microsoft 365. The stock is now up 50% for the year.

U.S. futures are mostly higher, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up six-tenths of a cent at $3.569 per gallon.
