The 10 YR yield closed Wednesday at 3.380 (-4.36%) and the VIX at 20.34 (+5.06%). The 10 YR is currently at 3.404 and VIX is at 21.55 (+5.95%).

Yesterday, the Dow had its worst day since mid-December. Bank stocks weighed on markets, as did weak economic data: Holiday retail sales disappointed, and the producer price index, a measure of wholesale inflation, was softer than expected.

U.S. weekly jobless claims unexpectedly fall, suggesting the labor market remains tight despite higher interest rates. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 15,000 to a seasonally adjusted 190,000 for the week ended Jan. 14, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists had forecast 214,000 claims for the latest week. Claims have remained at levels consistent with a tight labor market, even as layoffs have accelerated in the technology industry and interest rate-sensitive sectors like finance and housing.

Microsoft (MSFT) said on Wednesday it would eliminate 10,000 jobs.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up +2.0 cents at $3.379 per gallon.
