The Dow stock winners Tuesday were led by Boeing (BA) 147.15 (+7.42%), Walgreens (WBA) 37.97 (+1.44%) and 3M (MMM) 130.20 (+0.92%).

The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Salesforce (CRM) 166.33 (-4.61%), Microsoft (MSFT) 253.67 (-4.10%) and Travelers (TRV) 165.28 (-1.92%).

The 10 YR yield is currently at 2.987% and the VIX is at 27.29 (+4.28%).

The latest consumer price index report came in hotter than expected, rising 9.1% from a year ago. Observers had expected an 8.8% year-over-year surge. Inflation has been soaring at rates not seen in four decades, and it has weighed on consumer sentiment even though Americans keep spending at high levels. Investors are eager for signs that inflation could be peaking, as the Federal Reserve considers whether to raise rates by 50 or 75 basis points during its next meeting.

On a monthly basis, the broadest measure of inflation rose at a pace of 1.3%, inching up from 1% in May and climbing at a faster tempo than the 1.1% climb economists had projected. This marked the largest monthly increase since 2005.

“Core” CPI, which excludes the more volatile food and energy components, rose 5.9% in June, compared to 6.0% in May. Economists expected a 5.7% increase in this measure.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down 2.4 cents at $4.631 per gallon.
