Monday the Dow closed down -164.31 (-0.52%) at 31,173.84.

Year-to-date the Dow is down -14.21%.

Monday, (9) of the Dow 30 stocks were up, none were at 52-week lows and none were at 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Monday were led by Merck (MRK) 94.30 (+1.64%), Visa (V) 205.06 (+0.73%) and Procter & Gamble (PG) 146.04 (+0.70%).

The Dow stock losers Monday were led by Nike (NKE) 105.11 (-2.61%), Disney (DIS) 93.64 (-2.32%) and Caterpillar (CAT) 175.02 (-2.28%).

The 10 YR yield is currently at 2.946% and the VIX is at 26.70 (+2.03%).

Stock futures are down this Tuesday morning, setting up a second straight day of losses. Markets are coming off a winning week, but investors are wary as companies start to report quarterly results that will be affected by surging inflation, volatile energy markets and continued supply chain problems.

The euro has been trading close to parity with the U.S. dollar, reflecting the grim economic circumstances in the euro zone. The bloc is struggling with inflation as well as with an energy shock stemming from Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Tomorrow we get a CPI read where consensus calls for a 1.1% monthly rise in the CPI, which would push the annual inflation rate above the 8.6% reported for May. The core CPI, excluding food and energy prices, is expected to rise a half percent, with the core inflation rate easing to 5.8% from 6%. March’s 6.5% core inflation rate was the highest since August 1982.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is down 2.3 cents at $4.655 per gallon.
