The Dow Market Happenings For Monday, October 19, 2021 – Visa (V) +5.45% YTD

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +125 points.

Monday the Dow closed down -36.15 (-0.10%) at 35,258.61.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +15.22%.

The Dow stock winners Monday were led by Goldman Sachs (GS) 413.69 (+1.88%), Home Depot (HD) 355.01 (+1.31%) and Apple (AAPL) 146.55 (+1.18%).

The Dow stock losers Monday were led by Disney (DIS) 171.14 (-3.01%), Amgen (AMGN) 203.13 (-2.27%) and Travelers (TRV) 152.88 (-1.77%).

U.S. oil prices, as measured by West Texas Intermediate crude, hit new seven-year highs Monday near $84 per barrel at one stage. Early Tuesday, WTI was trading above $83 per barrel.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) said in Tuesday’s earnings report that it sold $502 million of its Covid vaccine in the third quarter. Per-share profit exceeded expectations, while revenue fell short. JNJ shares fell in the premarket.

Bond yields rose Tuesday after weaker U.S. housing data. The 10-year Treasury yield was trading around 1.6% following the government saying that September housing starts dropped a bigger-than-expected 1.6% and building permits declined a disappointing 7.7%. Starts and permits were revised lower in August.

Procter & Gamble (PG) fell more than 1% in the premarket after the consumer products giant on Tuesday reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue in its fiscal first quarter. However, higher costs were a drag on profit, which was slightly lower than the same quarter a year ago. Revenue grew just 5%.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.5 cents at $3.340 per gallon.
