The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Boeing (BA) 159.54 (-6.81%), Apple (AAPL) 113.16 (-2.87%), Microsoft (MSFT) 205.91 (-2.12%), American Express (AXP) 101.76 (-2.05%) and Home Depot (HD) 276.47 (-2.00%).

Stocks collapsed Tuesday afternoon after Trump said he ordered an end to stimulus negotiations until after the November election. The Dow swung more than 600 points following the announcement and closed down -1.34%.

Hours before Trump tweeted, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell warned of the risks of passing too little relief. An inadequate fiscal stimulus could give way to a “weak recovery” and create “unnecessary hardship for households and businesses,” the central-bank chief said in a Tuesday keynote speech to the National Association for Business Economics. Conversely, he said, the “risks of overdoing it seem, for now, to be smaller,” as extraneous stimulus funds would still be put to use.

In response to Trump’s demand for his team to call off stimulus negotiations, Pelosi said Tuesday the president was “putting himself first at the expense of the country.” Ms. Pelosi also accused him of showing “his contempt for science, his disdain for our heroes — in health care, first responders, sanitation, transportation, food workers, teachers and others.”

European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up one-tenth of a cent at $2.183 per gallon.
