Initial jobless claims sank by 15,000 to 234,000 in the week ended Jan 14. Economists had expected new claims to total 245,000. The monthly average of claims also fell by 10,250 to 246,750 to mark the lowest level since November 1973.
European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly lower.
The national average price of gasoline is down three-tenths of a cent at $2.332 per gallon.
