Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +14 points.

Friday the Dow closed down -8.69 (-0.03%) at 34,746.25.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +13.53%.

The Dow stock winners Friday were led by Chevron (CVX) 108.05 (+2.24%), IBM (IBM) 143.22 (+0.99%) and UnitedHealth (UNH) 408.46 (+0.93%).

The Dow stock losers Friday were led by Merck (MRK) 80.63 (-1.60%), Verizon (VZ) 53.24 (-1.22%) and Walgreens (WBA) 47.38 (-0.98%).

A huge miss on September employment growth was largely overshadowed by optimism about a short-term debt ceiling deal.

The Dow is about 2.5% away from its Aug. 16 record close.

There was no U.S. bond trading Monday due to the Columbus Day holiday.

U.S. oil prices, measured by West Texas Intermediate crude, surged 3.5% on Monday to more than $82 per barrel after rising nearly 4.6% last week. Gasoline prices at the pump were also at seven-year highs, around $3.27 per gallon, according to AAA.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday there’s an “enormous amount at stake” after the Senate approved only a short-term extension of the debt ceiling, again setting up the potential for default in December if lawmakers are unable to make another deal. “A failure to raise the debt ceiling would probably cause a recession,” Yellen reiterated.

This week JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Goldman Sachs (GS) report their third-quarter earnings.

U.S. futures are mixed, European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up five-tenths of a cent at $3.274 per gallon.
