Thursday the Dow was up +53.79 (+0.15%) at 34,987.02.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +14.31%.

The Dow stock winners Thursday were led by Honeywell (HON) 232.81 (+2.21%), UnitedHealth (UNH) 420.05 (+1.28%) and Home Depot (HD) 322.71 (+1.09%).

The Dow stock losers Thursday were led by Salesforce (CRM) 237.58 (-2.00%), Walgreens (WBA) 46.25 (-1.34%) and Intel (INTC) 55.81 (-1.26%).

June retail sales came in above forecasts, rising 0.6%, the Commerce Department said Friday morning. Economists had expected a 0.4% decline. In May, retail sales fell more than projected.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she expects “several more months of rapid inflation” before price pressures begin to subside. “I’m not saying that this is a one-month phenomenon. But I think over the medium term, we’ll see inflation decline back toward normal levels.

Los Angeles County, the nation’s largest, is requiring people to wear face masks indoors again due to a rise in coronavirus cases, driven by the highly transmissible delta variant. The mandate, which also applies to people who have been vaccinated against Covid, goes into effect before midnight Saturday.

US futures are higher, European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mixed.

The national average price of gasoline is up eight-tenths of a cent at $3.163 per gallon.
