DJIA Market Happenings For Thursday, January 9, 2020

Dow stocks at 52 week highs include Apple (AAPL), Goldman Sachs (GS), Microsoft (MSFT) and Visa (V). There are no Dow stock 52 week lows.

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open up +100 points.

Wednesday the Dow was up +161.41 (+0.56%) at 28,745.09.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +0.72%.

There were 21 Dow stocks up Wednesday.

The Dow stock winners Wednesday were led by UnitedHealth (UNH) +2.11%, American Express (AXP) +1.73% and Visa (V) +1.71%.

The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Walgreens (WBA) -5.84%, Boeing (BA) -1.75% and Exxon Mobil (XOM) -1.51%.

Verizon (VZ) dropped annual contracts for Fios TV and internet customers, eliminating the traditional bundles and allowing customers to select internet, tv, and phone packages separately. Customers will also be allowed to change any selections monthly.

Walmart (WMT) said it opened 134 new stores in Mexico last year, the biggest expansion by the retailer in that country since 2013.

Coca-Cola (KO) was upgraded to “outperform” from “neutral” at Credit Suisse, which said structural changes at the company should allow revenue and returns on investment to grow faster.

Unemployment insurance weekly claims in the week ending January 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 214,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up by 1,000 from 222,000 to 223,000. The 4-week moving average was 224,000, a decrease of 9,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 233,250 to 233,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending December 28, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending December 28 was 1,803,000, an increase of 75,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 1,728,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,744,750, an increase of 33,000 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 1,711,750.

European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.1 cents at $2.596 per gallon.

Goldman Sachs (GS) reports earnings on 1/15/2020 before the market open.
