Jobless claims declined by 10,000 to 258,000 in the week ended Dec. 3. The median forecast called for 255,000. Continuing claims decreased to a three-week low. No states or U.S. territories estimated jobless claims last week.
European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
The national average price of gasoline is up one-tenth of a cent at $2.198 per gallon.
