DJIA Market Happenings For Monday, September 8, 2014

Dow stocks at 52 week highs include Microsoft (MSFT), Merck (MRK) and Nike (NKE). There are no Dow stock 52 week lows.

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to open down -38 points.

Friday, the Dow closed up +67.78 (+0.40%) at 17,17.36.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +3.38%. Nasdaq is up +9.7%, S&P 500 +8.6% and Russell 2000 +0.6%.

Last week the Dow was up +0.2%, Nasdaq +0.1%, S&P 500 +0.2% and Russell 2000 was down -0.4%.

Dow stock winners Friday included Nike (NKE) +2.66% and Home Depot (HD) +1.87%.

Dow stock losers Friday included Boeing (BA) -0.61% and United Technologies (UTX) -0.48%.

There were 22 Dow stock winners Friday.

General Electric (GE) will sell its appliances business to Electrolux AB (ELUXY -1.84%) for $3.3 billion.

Bank of America (BAC) was upgraded to ‘Buy’ from ‘Neutral’ at Goldman Sachs.

Yahoo! (YHOO) up in premarket trading after Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. said it plans to raise as much as $21.1 billion in an intial public offering.

The U.K. pound took a beating in currency markets on rising risk that Scotland may vote next week to break away from the United Kingdom. The pound took a sharp tumble against the U.S. dollar after a weekend poll showed for the first time that Scottish voters who want to break away from the U.K. outnumbered voters who want to stay.

European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down two-tenths of a cent at $3.438 per gallon.

Earnings Reports.

There are no Dow stocks set to report earnings in the near term.

Piedmont Natural Gas Company (PNY) reported a third quarter loss of $0.09, compared to last year’s loss of $0.03 on revenue of $162.94 million.

Stocks reporting earnings today include:

Campbell Soup Company (CPB) is expected to report fourth quarter EPS of $0.49 on revenue of $1.87 billion, compared to last year’s EPS of $0.45 on revenue of $1.82 billion.

Pep Boys- Manny, Moe & Jack (PBY) is expected to report third quarter EPS of $0.17 on revenue of $534.26 million, compared to last year’s EPS of $0.18 on revenue of $527.62 million.
