The Labor Department reported initial claims for state unemployment benefits decreased by 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 289,000 for the week ended Aug. 2. The prior week’s claims were revised to show 1,000 more applications received than previously reported. Economists had forecast claims rising to 305,000 for the week ended Aug. 2. The four-week average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell 4,000 to 293,500, the lowest level since February 2006.
Russia has imposed a ban on imports of beef, pork, fruit and vegetables, poultry, fish, cheeses, and milk from Europe, the U.S., Australia, Canada and Norway in retaliation for Western sanctions.
European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.
The national average price of gasoline is down eight-tenths of a cent at $3.475 per gallon.
