Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) lost 0.13 percent in pre-market trade after it announced a 10 percent decline in global retail sales from June to August.
General Electric Co. (GE) was down 0.12 percent before the markets opened after trading on a high when the companyâ€™s chief executive remarked that he had an all-time high backlog of new business.
European markets are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.
The national average price of gasoline is down 1.4 cents to $3.447 per gallon.
