Market Happenings For Thursday, May 02, 2013

Dow stocks at 52 week highs include only Walt Disney (DIS). There are no Dow stock 52 week lows.

The Market

Wednesday the Dow closed down -138.85 (-0.94%) at 14,700.95.

This morning the Dow is indicated to open up +76 points.

Yesterday the Fed said it was prepared to increase or decrease asset purchases depending on the economy and that inflation is running below the long-term objective. The FOMC also said that fiscal policy is restraining growth and that labor markets are improving but the unemployment rate is still elevated.

Jobless claims, dropped 18,000 to the lower-than-expected tally of 324,000 in the week ended April 27.

Tomorrow we get the government jobs report.

European markets are mostly down and Asian markets ended down.

The national average price of gasoline is up three-tenths of a cent to $3.525 per gallon. Looks like it’s time to gouge the summer traveler.

DIS reports earnings on 5/7/13 after the close.

Merck reported better than consensus earnings yesterday.

0830 ET Mar trade balance expected -$42.3 billion, Feb -$43.0 billion.

0830 ET Preliminary Q1 non-farm productivity expected 1.0%, Q4 -1.9%. Q1 unit labor costs expected +0.7%, Q4 +4.6%.

0830 ET USDA weekly Export Sales.
