The VIX closed Tuesday at 18.01 (-2.01%) and the 10 YR at 4.465 (+1.22%). The VIX is currently at 18.15 (+0.89%). The 10YR is at 4.477 (+0.25%).

The consumer price index rose at its fastest clip in nearly three years last month, according to federal data released yesterday. The headline annual inflation reading came in at 3.8%, its highest level since 2023, moving further from the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%.

Wholesale prices in April rose the most in three years, signaling more nettlesome inflation as pipeline costs intensify. The producer price index rose a seasonally adjusted 1.4% for the month, much higher than the 0.5% Dow Jones consensus forecast and the upwardly revised 0.7% March increase, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday. This was the largest monthly gain since March 2022. On an annual basis, the index was up 6%, the biggest increase since December 2022.

Oil futures extended losses. The West Texas Intermediate futures for June was 0.97% lower at $101.15 per barrel as of 4:23 a.m. ET. Brent crude futures for July fell 0.80% at $106.90 per barrel.

U.S. futures are mostly lower, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up seven-tenths of a cent at $4.511 per gallon.
