Initial jobless claims were slightly higher than expected last week but still in keeping with a subdued level of layoffs. First-time filings totaled a seasonally adjusted 214,000 for the week ending April 18, up 6,000 from the prior period and above the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 210,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, edged up to 1.82 million.

Honeywell (HON) shed 5.6% after it reported mixed first-quarter results and issued lackluster second-quarter guidance. In Q1, adjusted earnings of $2.45 per share beat an estimate of $2.32 per share, though revenue of $9.1 billion was below consensus. For Q2, the company sees EPS between $2.35 and $2.45, below a forecast of $2.56.

International Business Machines (IBM) slipped nearly 7% after IBM failed to raise its full-year guidance after posting an earnings beat.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is down two-tenths of a cent at $4.020 per gallon.
