The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Walmart (WMT) 128.85 (-3.76%), Salesforce (CRM) 184.29 (-2.86%) and 3M (MMM) 167.62 (-2.44%).
The VIX closed Tuesday at 20.29 (-4.29%) and the 10 YR at 4.060 (+0.02%). The VIX is currently at 19.74 (-2.71%). The 10YR is at 4.072 (+0.62%).
Nvidia (NVDA) shares gained 2% in premarket on the heels of Meta announcing Tuesday that it’s going to use millions of Nvidia’s chips in its data center buildout.
Amazon (AMZN) rose around 1% after regulatory filings showed Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square grew its stake in the e-commerce giant by 65% during the fourth quarter. That makes Amazon the fund’s third-largest holding. The move comes after the stock snapped a nine-day losing streak. Amazon said it expects to spend $200 billion in capital expenditures this year, a nearly 60% increase from last year and more than $50 billion above Wall Street’s forecast.
Today we get the minutes from the Fed’s January meeting. On Friday we get the personal consumption expenditure price index reading. The PCE, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, will give further insight into the state of the economy.
Economic data on housing activity and orders for long-lasting goods on Wednesday came in better than expected. Housing starts totaled just over 1.4 million for December, better than the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 1.31 million, the Census Bureau reported. Building permits came in at 1.45 million, topping the forecast for 1.4 million. In a separate report, the bureau said durable goods orders fell 1.4%, also for December. That was better than the outlook for a 2% decline. When excluding transportation, orders rose 0.9%.
U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
The national average price of gasoline is up six-tenths of a cent at $2.923 per gallon.
