The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to be up +229 points.

Tuesday the Dow closed up +52.27 (+0.10%) at 50,188.14.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +4.42%.

The Dow stock winners Tuesday were led by Disney (DIS) 109.96 (+2.64%), Home Depot (HD) 389.68 (+2.28%) and Travelers (TRV) 298.61 (+1.98%).

The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Amgen (AMGN) 364.65 (-2.97%), Walmart (WMT) 126.70 (-1.80%) and Coca Cola (KO) 76.81 (-1.49%).

The VIX closed Tuesday at 17.79 (+2.48%) and the 10 YR at 4.164 (+0.19%). The VIX is currently at 16.95 (-4.72%). The 10YR is at 4.197 (+1.11%).

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ January nonfarm payrolls report, which had been delayed due to a partial government shutdown that ended on Feb. 3, showed job growth of 130,000 last month. Economists had called for a gain of 55,000. The latest figure also marked a sizable increase from December, which was downwardly revised to 48,000. The unemployment rate also landed at 4.3%, a bit below the forecast for 4.4%.

The jobs report eased the negative sentiment in the market that was driven by weaker-than-expected consumer data released on Tuesday. That report showed that consumer spending in December was flat, missing the 0.4% monthly gain expected from economists.

Bitcoin’s rebound lost steam on Wednesday, with the world’s largest cryptocurrency dropping back down below $67,000 earlier in the day. The cryptocurrency is currently trading at $68,390.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.6 cents at $2.937 per gallon.
