The VIX closed Tuesday at 14.00 (-0.57%) and the 10 YR at 4.175 (+0.12%). The VIX is currently at 14.03 (+0.21%). The 10YR is at 4.158 (-0.31%).

Tuesday, the Commerce Department issued its a third-quarter reading of the U.S. gross domestic product that came in at 4.3%, surpassing the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 3.2%.The report, which had been delayed by the government shutdown, initially led traders to lower their expectations of interest rate cuts early next year. However, fed funds futures trading still indicates two rate cuts by the end of 2026.

Investors continue to hope for the coveted Santa Claus rally, a year-end stock market surge that occurs between the last five trading days of the year and the first two of the new year — in this case from the opening bell on Dec. 24 until Jan. 5.

Jobless claims for the prior weekly period were less than anticipated. Initial filings for the week ended Dec. 20 totaled 214,000, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. That’s down 10,000 from the previous week’s 224,000 and below the 225,000 that economists had forecast.

Nike (NKE) stock rose 2% after a filing showed that Apple CEO Tim Cook bought nearly $3 million worth of Nike shares.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is down four-tenths of a cent at $2.854 per gallon.

JPMorgan (JPM) reports earnings on 1/13/2026 after the market close.
