The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to be up +91 points.

Tuesday the Dow closed up +664.18 (+1.43%) at 47,112.45.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +10.74%.

Tuesday, (28) Dow stocks were up, none made 52-week lows, and (4) made 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Tuesday were led by Merck (MRK) 105.66 (+5.24%), Home Depot (HD) 351.07 (+4.31%), Salesforce (CRM) 234.12 (+3.22%) and Walmart (WMT) 107.00 (+2.83%).

The Dow stock losers Tuesday were Nvidia (NVDA) 177.82 (-2.59%) and Chevron (CVX) 148.53 (-0.81%).

The VIX closed Tuesday at 18.56 (-9.55%) and the 10 YR at 4.007 (-0.74%). The VIX is currently at 17.97 (-3.18%). The 10YR is at 4.016 (+0.27%).

Investors are focused on the outlook for another interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve’s December gathering. Fed funds traders are pricing in an 84% likelihood of a rate decrease, up from around 50% just a week ago.

Fed funds futures rose after Bloomberg reported that White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, who’s seen as likely to advocate for further cuts, is a front runner to succeed Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits came in less than expected last week. The Labor Department reported Wednesday that first-time filings for the week ended Nov. 22 totaled a seasonally adjusted 216,000, down 6,000 from the revised level for the prior week and lower than the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 225,000. The latest figure is the lowest level since April 12, when initial claims also stood at 216,000.

U.S. futures are mostly higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down 1.3 cents at $3.042 per gallon.
