The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to be up +35 points.

Monday the Dow closed up +66.27 (+0.14%) at 46,381.54.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +9.02%.

Monday, (12) Dow stocks were up, none made 52-week lows, and (3) made 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Monday were led by Apple (AAPL) 256.099 (+4.32%), Nvidia (NVDA) 183.61 (+3.93%) and IBM (IBM) 271.37 (+1.87%).

The Dow stock losers Monday were led by Procter & Gamble (PG) 153.07 (-1.90%), 3M (MMM) 153.86 (-.75%) and Amazon (AMZN) 227.63 (-1.66%).

The VIX closed Monday at 16.12 (+4.34%) and the 10 YR at 4.144 (+0.24%). The VIX is currently at 15.99 (-0.68%). The 10YR is at 4.130 (-0.07%).

The Dow closed at all-time highs yesterday.

The latest reading of the personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, will be released Friday and is expected to give clues on the path of monetary policy for the remainder of the year.

Nvidia (NVDA) shares were down slightly in the premarket a day after the tech giant rose nearly 4% on the back of a $100 billion deal with OpenAI. Monday’s gain marked the stock’s third straight day of gains. It was also a new high.

Investors are also watching the increasing chance of a government shutdown ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline after the Senate last week rejected Republican and Democratic proposals to at least temporarily fund the federal government. The stock market has historically brushed off concerns tied to government shutdowns, but this time around could be different as the economic backdrop heading into a shutdown is the weakest in more than two decades.

U.S. futures are mostly higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.3 cents at $3.171 per gallon.
