Dow stocks hitting 52-week highs include American Express (AXP) 336.00 (+2.74%), Caterpillar (CAT) 450.66 (+2.27%), Goldman Sachs (GS) 794.22 (+1.11%), JPMorgan (JPM) 311.75 (+0.83%) and Walmart (WMT) 104.27 (+0.82%). There were no Dow stock 52-week lows.

The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to be up +27 points.

Wednesday the Dow closed up +260.42 (+0.57%) at 46,018.32.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +8.17%.

Wednesday, (23) Dow stocks were up, none made 52-week lows, and (5) made 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Wednesday were American Express (AXP) 336.00 (+2.74%), Caterpillar (CAT) 450.66 (+2.27%) and Visa (V) 346.20 (+1.81%).

The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Nvidia (NVDA) 170.29 (-2.62%), Home Depot (HD) 417.00 (-1.06%) and Amazon (AMZN) 231.62 (-1.04%).

The VIX closed Wednesday at 15.72 (-3.91%) and the 10 YR at 4.073 (+1.24%). The VIX is currently at 15.09 (-4.01%). The 10YR is at 4.113 (+0.98%).

Yesterday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell put a damper on investor hopes that the central bank would be on a lengthy rate-cutting path this year, as he called the latest cut “risk management.” In fact, policymakers are predicting two more reductions this year, but just one in 2026, while traders had priced in two to three more cuts next year.

Initial unemployment claims settled down last week after a brief spike raised concerns that layoffs are on the rise. Initial filings for unemployment insurance totaled a seasonally adjusted 231,000 for the week ending Sept. 13, down 33,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised level and below the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 240,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. A spike last week from Texas that drove much of the prior week’s increase eased, with claims down more than 5,000, according to unadjusted data. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, also edged lower, down to 1.92 million.

Intel soared 30% after Nvidia (NVDA) said it will invest $5 billion in Intel to co-develop data center and PC products. Nvidia added 3%, one day after it lost 2.6%.

U.S. futures are high, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up three-tenths of a cent at $3.203 per gallon.
