Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook will keep her seat at the table at this week’s central bank meeting. An appeals court last night blocked Trump from firing Cook ahead of the Fed’s September gathering, which kicks off today, meaning Cook will get to cast a vote on interest rates.
Traders are gearing up for the Fed’s interest rate meeting, set to begin today, with a decision Wednesday. Fed funds futures pricing in a 100% likelihood of at least a quarter-point rate cut. Traders will still closely monitor Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s subsequent press conference for any clues on the future of monetary policy.
Consumers spent at a faster-than-expected clip in August, defying worries that a weakening labor market might impact demand. Retail sales rose 0.6% for the month, the same pace as the upwardly revised level for July and better than the Dow Jones estimate for a gain of 0.3%, according to numbers adjusted for seasonality but not inflation. The consumer price index increased 0.4% on the month, indicating that consumers kept ahead of inflation. Excluding autos, sales increased 0.7%, better than the 0.4% forecast and well ahead of the 0.4% pace in July. On an annual basis sales, sales were up 5%, well ahead of the CPI gain of 2.9%. Online sales increased 2% for the month while bars and restaurants saw a 0.7% increase. Gas station receipts grew by 0.5% as prices rose, while clothing saw a 1% increase as tariffs fed higher prices there as well.
U.S. futures are mixed, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.
The national average price of gasoline is up nine-tenths of a cent at $3.186 per gallon.
