The VIX closed Thursday at 14.83 (2.35%) and the 10 YR at 4.284 (+1.18%). The VIX is currently at 14.58 (-1.69%). The 10YR is at 4.285 (-0.05%).

July’s retail sales data, released on Friday morning, painted a still-healthy picture for the U.S. consumer. Retail sales rose 0.5% last month, meeting consensus expectations. Retail sales excluding automobiles gained 0.3%, also matching estimates. On a year-over-year basis, sales increased 3.9%.

Aiding Dow futures this morning was a +12% surge in UnitedHealth (UNH) after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and Michael Burry’s Scion Asset Management revealed they bought stock in the insurance giant during the second quarter.

Import prices increased 0.4%, pushed higher by energy prices, while export prices were up 0.1%. The consensus forecast was for import prices to be flat.

The Empire State Manufacturing Index posted a reading of 11.9, much higher than the 1.8 estimate. New orders posted a strong gain while prices edged lower as did the employment index.

U.S. futures are mostly higher, European stocks are mixed and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down seven-tenths of a cent at $3.153 per gallon.
