The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Amgen (AMGN) 284.67 (-5.14%), Disney (DIS) 115.17 (-2.66%) and UnitedHealth (UNH) 245.78 (-2.08%).

The VIX closed Wednesday at 16.77 (-6.05%) and the 10 YR at 4.240 (+0.66%). The VIX is currently at 16.13 (-3.82%). The 10YR is at 4.235 (+0.12%).

Trump announced late Wednesday that there would be a 100% tariff on imported chips, but not for companies that are “building in the United States.” Nvidia shares rose more than 1% in the premarket.

Apple (AAPL) gained 2% after the iPhone maker announced plans to spend an additional $100 billion on U.S. companies and suppliers over the next four years. That’s on top of a $500 billion announcement Apple made in February.

Jobless claims nudged higher last week while long-term unemployment continued to rise, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Initial filings for unemployment insurance totaled a seasonally adjusted 226,000 for the week ending Aug. 2, up 7,000 from the prior period and higher than the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 221,000. Also, continuing claims, which run a week behind, continued their ascent. The rolls of those collecting for multiple weeks increased to 1.97 million, up 38,000 from the prior week and the highest since Nov. 6, 2021.

Also Thursday, the BLS reported that nonfarm productivity increased 2.4% in the second quarter, higher than the 2% estimate, while unit labor costs rose 1.6%, just 0.1 percentage point above forecast.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down four-tenths of a cent at $3.166 per gallon.
