Layoffs at U.S. companies remained low last week as initial filings for unemployment insurance edged down, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Jobless claims totaled a seasonally adjusted 217,000 for the week ending July 19, down 4,000 from the prior period and short of the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 227,000. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, also showed little change, up 4,000 to 1.955 million.

IBM (IBM) slipped 5% after second-quarter software revenue missed expectations.

U.S. futures are mostly lower, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up seven-tenths of a cent at $3.162 per gallon.
