Stock futures tumbled on Monday as a downgrade of the U.S.? credit rating by Moody’s caused Treasury yields to spike. Moody’s on Friday after the bell bumped the country’s rating down by one notch to Aa1 from Aaa, bringing the agency in line with its peers. The firm cited the financing challenges tied to the federal government’s growing budget deficit and the ramifications of rolling over existing U.S. debts in a period of high borrowing costs.

Walmart (WMT) shares slipped 1.7% after Trump said on Saturday that Walmart should “eat the tariffs” and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday CEO Doug McMillon told him the company would absorb some of the levies.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up one-tenth of a cent at $3.179 per gallon.
