Stock futures fall again Monday after a two-day wipeout following Trump’s announcement of new global tariffs. The first set of 10% duties took effect on Saturday and will be followed by higher tariffs of up to about 50% on trading partners including China, Vietnam and the European Union on Wednesday. Trump shrugged off the market plunge, comparing it to a sick patient taking medicine and golfed all weekend. I think impeachment is what is called for in this case.
Trump’s contagion spread to other assets and around the globe. The price of bitcoin, tumbled below $77,000. U.S. crude oil dropped below $60 a barrel to a multiyear low. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 13% for its biggest decline since 1997. Germany’s DAX Index lost as much as 10% during Monday’s session.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said in his annual letter that Trump’s tariffs will likely boost prices on both domestic and imported goods, weighing down a U.S. economy that had already been slowing.
If the S&P 500 ends at least 4% down Monday, which would mark its third straight day of a losses of 4% or greater, this would mark the first time since the Great Depression in 1933 it has notched such large back-to-back consecutive losses. This would also be only the third time in history the broad market index has finished 4% or lower for three straight days, all of which were during the Great Depression.
Caterpillar (CAT) fell more than 4%, one of several machinery stocks struggling following UBS downgrades. Machinery demand could take a hit if President Donald Trump’s tariffs catalyze a global trade war and higher prices.
Markets are down across the board again.
U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended lower.
The national average price of gasoline is up one-tenth of a cent at $3.259 per gallon.
