The Dow stock winners Wednesday were led by Boeing (BA) 172.62 (+6.84%), American Express (AXP) 270.65 (+3.02%) and IBM (IBM) 252.29 (+2.16%).

The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Amgen (AMGN) 315.75 (-0.91%), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) 162.99 (-0.77%) and Merck (MRK) 94.02 (-0.74%).

The VIX closed Wednesday at 19.90 (-8.29%) and the 10 YR at 4.248 (-0.23%). The VIX is currently at 20.75 (+4.27%). The 10YR is at 4.179 (-1.86%).

The Fed kept a forecast for two rate cuts this year and held the federal funds rate in a range of 4.25% to 4.5% Wednesday, the central bank also raised its inflation outlook and lowered its economic growth projection.

Initial unemployment claims nudged higher last week but indicated that layoffs generally remain low despite the White House’s efforts to reduce the federal workforce. First-time filings for the week ending March 15 totaled a seasonally adjusted 223,000, up just 2,000 from the prior period and below the Dow Jones estimate for 225,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. The four-week moving averaged inched up to 227,000. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, totaled 1.89 million, up 33,000 from the previous period. In Washington, D.C., where Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has been paring back federal employment rolls, claims decreased by 246.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up 1.9 cents at $3.121 per gallon.
