The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to be up +117 points.

Monday the Dow closed down -649.67 (-1.48%) at 43,191.24.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +1.52%.

Monday, (7) Dow stocks were up, none made 52-week lows, and (2) made 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Monday were led by Verizon (VZ) 43.87 (+1.79%), Coca Cola (KO) 72.32 (+1.56%) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) 167.28 (+1.37&).

The Dow stock losers Monday were led by Nvidia (NVDA) 114.06 (-8.69%), Chevron (CVX) 153.09 (-3.49%) and Caterpillar (CAT 332.04 (-3.46%).

The VIX closed Monday at 22.78 (+16.05%) and the 10 YR at 4.152 (-0.74%). The VIX is currently at 23.81 (+4.52%). The 10YR is at 4.155 (-0.60%).

President Donald Trump’s promised tariffs on Canada and Mexico take effect Tuesday after hopes for a last-minute deal were dashed. The plan includes levies of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as another 10% hike on goods from China after initiating an earlier 10% on that country last month. China has already retaliated, saying it would impose additional tariffs of up to 15% on some U.S. goods, including corn and soybeans, starting March 10. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country would also put a 25% tariff on U.S. imports.

Nvidia (NVDA) continued sliding before the bell on Tuesday, placing downward pressure on the stock market. The mega cap tech giant dropped more than 2% in premarket trading. The stock has tumbled more than 12% over the last week, bringing its 2025 loss to around 15%.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), shot up as President Donald Trump’s tariffs took effect. The VIX saw its biggest one-day spike of 2025 on Monday, jumping more than 3 points after Trump reaffirmed plans for the long-awaited import taxes to go forward, which hampered hopes of a last-minute deal.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up two-tenths of a cent at $3.099 per gallon.
