Stock futures were lower after China imposed retaliatory tariffs on select U.S. imports.
Shares of Merck (MRK) dropped more than 7% in early morning trading Tuesday after the pharmaceutical giant issued full-year 2025 revenue guidance that fell short of Wall Street’s expectations. The company said its decision to halt shipments of Gardasil, its key vaccine that prevents cancer from HPV to China was behind the lower forecast. But Merck topped fourth-quarter estimates, reporting adjusted earnings of $1.72 per share and revenue of $15.62 billion. The company sees 2025 earnings per share coming in a range of $8.88 and $9.03. Analysts expected a forecast around $9.13 per share. Merck’s revenue expectations of $64.1 billion to $65.6 billion was also below what analysts anticipated.
The Chinese government slapped tariffs of up to 15% on U.S. imports of coal and liquefied natural gas and 10% higher duties on crude oil, farm equipment and selected cars, effective Feb. 10. The move comes after the U.S. agreed to pause more aggressive levies on Canada and Mexico. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in a post on social media site X on Monday evening that Trump agreed to halt the implementation of tariffs against Canada for at least 30 days. Earlier on Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that duties on Mexico imports to the U.S. would also be halted for a month.
Later today we get the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey for December, as well as durable orders. The main event this week will be Friday’s January nonfarm payrolls report, which will add further clarity to the employment picture.
Asia-Pacific markets rose Tuesday after Donald Trump paused tariffs on Mexico for a month, while Canada also said the U.S. president had put on hold proposed tariffs on its exports.
U.S. futures are mostly higher, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly lower.
The national average price of gasoline is up nine-tenths of a cent at $3.107 per gallon.
