Walmart (WMT) increased its full-year outlook on Tuesday as it beat Wall Street’s third-quarter earnings expectations. The nation’s largest retailer now expects full-year net sales growth between 4.8% and 5.1%, up from its previous forecast for growth between 3.75% and 4.75%. Customers visited both stores and the website more than the year-ago quarter, and tended to spend more when they did, as U.S. transactions rose 3.1% and the average ticket increased by 2.1%. Walmart posted adjusted earning of 58 cents on $169.59 billion in revenue. That surpassed the EPS of 53 cents and $167.72 billion expected by analysts. Walmart rose 4% before the bell.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the U.S. on Tuesday that the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons had lowered. Under the new doctrine, Russia would consider using such weaponry if it — or allies — were met with “with the use of conventional weapons that created a critical threat to their sovereignty and (or) their territorial integrity.” The new stance comes after President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to use U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia.
New housing data missed expectations in October as surging mortgage rates coincided with a decline in activity, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. Privately owned new construction totaled a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.31 million units, down 3.1% from September and below the Dow Jones estimate for 1.34 million. The total also was 4% below October 2023. On building permits, the total of 1.42 million represented a 0.6% monthly decline and missed the forecast for 1.43 million. Permits declined 7.7% from a year ago.
U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended higher.
The national average price of gasoline is down eight-tenths of a cent at $3.063 per gallon.
