The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Caterpillar (CAT) 387.96 (-2.58%), Dow (DOW) 53.21 (-2.58%) and American Express (AXP) 269.11 (-1.71%).

The VIX closed Wednesday at 20.86 (-2.61%) and the 10 YR at 4.073 (+0.17%). The VIX is currently at 21.09 (+1.10%). The 10YR is at 4.089 (+0.57%).

The September consumer price index rose more than expected last month, increasing 0.2% on a monthly basis and 2.4% from the previous year. That came in ahead of the 0.1% gain and 2.3% increase expected by analysts. The year-over-year number marked the lowest increase since February 2021. Excluding food and energy, core prices increased 0.3% on the month, putting the annual rate at 3.3%. Both core readings also were 0.1 percentage point above forecast.

Initial filings for unemployment benefits took an unexpected turn higher, hitting 258,000 for the week ending Oct. 5. That was the highest total since Aug. 5, 2023, a gain of 33,000 from the previous week and well above the forecast for 230,000. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, rose to 1.861 million, an increase of 42,000.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up seven-tenths of a cent at $3.212 per gallon.
