The Dow stock losers Thursday were led by Merck (MRK) 110.18 (-1.70%), Boeing (BA) 150.52 (-1.55%) and Amazon (AMZN) 181.96 (-1.52%).

The VIX closed Thursday at 20.49 (+8.41%) and the 10 YR at 3.840 (-0.13%). The VIX is currently at 19.14 (-6.59%). The 10YR is at 3.964 (+3.09%).

Nonfarm payrolls surged by 254,000 in September, up from a revised 159,000 in August and better than a 150,000 consensus forecast. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, down 0.1 percentage point as the survey of household employment showed an even stronger picture, with a gain of 430,000. Average hourly earnings increased 0.4% on the month and were up 4% from a year ago. Both figures were ahead of respective estimates.

The longshoremen’s port strike ended on Thursday, just two days after it began. “The International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. have reached a tentative agreement on wages and have agreed to extend the Master Contract until January 15, 2025 to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues,” The International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance announced in a joint statement. About 50,000 members of the ILA union walked off the job earlier this week. This strike was the first by the ILA since 1977.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down eight-tenths of a cent at $3.182 per gallon.
