The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Nike (NKE) 83.10 (-6.77%), Merck (MRK) 112.08 (-2.32%) and Intel (INTC) 22.39 (-1.32%).

The VIX closed Wednesday at 18.90 (-1.87%) and the 10 YR at 3.775 (+1.02%). The VIX is currently at 19.93 (+5.45%). The 10YR is at 3.810 (+0.82%).

Initial filings for unemployment benefits nudged higher last week and were slightly above expectations, the Labor Department reported Thursday. First-time claims totaled 225,000 for the week ending Sept. 28, up 6,000 from the upwardly revised previous total and higher than the 220,000 consensus estimate. Though claims rose, the four-week moving average, which smooths weekly volatility, edged down. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, were little changed at 1.826 million, below the 1.836 million estimate.

The growing fears have driven oil prices higher. U.S. crude futures rose more than 1.5%, bringing its week-to-date advance to 4.6%.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down six-tenths of a cent at $3.190 per gallon.
