Wednesday the Dow closed up +242.75 (+0.61%) at 40,008.39.

The Dow stock winners Wednesday were led by American Express (AXP) 243.76 (+2.00%), Home Depot (HD) 355.66 (+1.60%) and Travelers (TRV) 214.09 (+1.52%).

The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Intel (INTC) 19.92 (-2.69%), Merck (MRK) 113.58 (-0.71%) and Caterpillar (CAT) 337.59 (-0.36%)

The VIX closed Wednesday at 16.19 (-10.65%) and the 10 YR at 3.832 (-0.39%). The VIX is currently at 15.46 (-4.51%). The 10YR is at 3.932 (+3.07%).

Consumer spending increased more-than-expected in July, adding another layer of positive economic data to investors hoping to continue a recent market rally. U.S. Retail sales increased 1% in July, surpassing an estimate from Dow Jones that forecast 0.3%. Excluding auto-related figures, sales ticked up 0.4%, which was also better than a 0.1% forecast.

Walmart (WMT) surged 7% after the big-box retailer and Dow component reported quarterly earnings that beat forecasts. The big-box retailer raised its full-year outlook and reported improving sales and traffic to its website. Walmart said it now expects sales to accelerate by 3.75% to 4.75% for the full year, with adjusted earnings seen between $2.35 and $2.43 per share.

Cisco (CSCO) gained 6% after the networking company reported an earnings and revenue beat for its fiscal fourth quarter, and also issued an optimistic forecast. Cisco posted adjusted earnings of 87 cents per share on revenue of $13.64 billion, while analysts expected it to earn 85 cents per share on revenue of $13.54 billion. For the fiscal year, both revenue and earnings fell from the prior year, its first drop since 2020. Cisco also announced it will cut 7% of its global workforce.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down three-tenths of a cent at $3.442 per gallon.
