The Market

The VIX closed Wednesday at 15.97 (+1.78%) and the 10 YR at 4.643 (+1.00%). The VIX is currently at 16.87 (+5.64%). The 10YR is at 4.712 (+1.36%).

Gross domestic product, a broad measure of goods and services produced in the January-through-March period, increased at a 1.6% annualized pace, below the 2.4% estimate.

The personal consumption expenditures price index, a key inflation variable for the Federal Reserve, rose at a 3.4% annualized pace for the quarter, its biggest gain in a year.

Consumer spending increased 2.5% in the period, down from a 3.3% gain in the fourth quarter and below the 3% Wall Street estimate.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that initial jobless claims totaled 207,000 for the week of April 20, down 5,000 and below the 215,000 estimate.

U.S. Treasury yields rose on Thursday morning after the first-quarter GDP report showed slowing growth and rising consumer prices. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbed 5 basis points to 4.706%, hitting its highest level since Nov. 2 of last year. The 2-year Treasury yield rose about 6 basis points to 4.995%. A basis point is equal to 0.01 percentage points.

The Fed is due to convene for its policy meeting next week. Markets are widely expecting interest rates to remain unchanged then, with traders last pricing in the first rate cut for September.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is down two-tenths of a cent at $3.658 per gallon.
