The Dow stock winners Tuesday were led by Home Depot (HD) 303.63 (+5.40%), Walgreens (WBA) 21.09 (+4.56%) and Dow (DOW) 51.05 (+3.68%).

The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Travelers (TRV) 168.70 (-1.35%), UnitedHealth (UNH) 540.46 (-0.39%) and Merck (MRK) 102.17 (-0.29%).

The VIX closed Tuesday at 14.16 (-4.07%) and the 10 YR at 4.452 (-4.01%). The VIX is currently at 14.10 (-0.42%). The 10YR is at 4.573 (+0.04%).

The producer price index, a measure of wholesale prices, fell by 0.5% in October, marking its largest one-month decline since April 2020. This is the second piece of data this week showing inflation pressures may be abating. To be sure, retail sales for October fell 0.2%, underscoring the fact that consumers are still feeling the pinch from higher prices.

Late Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a bill to avert a government shutdown. The measure will go to the Senate for a vote. If cleared by lawmakers, the legislation goes to President Joe Biden. Without a funding bill, the federal government is slated to shut down at the end of the week.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down eight-tenths of a cent at $3.345 per gallon.
