The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Walgreens (WBA) 21.37 (-2.69%), Chevron (CVX) 156.65 (-2.51%) and Travelers (TRV) 157.92 (-0.80%).

The VIX closed Tuesday at 18.97 (-6.87%) and the 10 YR at 4.834 (-0.10%). The VIX is currently at 18.97 (0.00%). The 10YR is at 4.882 (+0.89%).

The Dow snapped a four-day losing streak, rising 200 points. Also, Verizon (VZ) stock closed up more than 9%, marking the company’s best day in almost 15 years.

Microsoft (MSFT) saw its shares jump 6% in extended trading after the company said its net income grew 27%. Microsoft’s revenue rose almost 13% year over year in the quarter and beat analysts’ estimates for both revenue and earnings per share.

Boeing (BA) ticked up 3.1% after the company’s third-quarter results showed revenue for commercial airplanes exceeded expectations. The company also maintained its free cash flow outlook for the year. To be sure, the company posted a bigger-than-expected adjusted loss for the quarter.

Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota had a memorable, few hours. He prevailed over a crowded field of eight GOP candidates to secure the nomination for speaker after several rounds of closed-door voting Tuesday morning. But, in a now-familiar cycle, he dropped his bid for speaker just hours later when it became clear that he didn’t have enough votes to clinch the spot.

U.S. futures are mostly lower, European stocks are mostly higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down four-tenths of a cent at $3.541 per gallon.
