The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Walgreens (WBA) 21.25 (-7.00%), Caterpillar (CAT) 259.22 (-4.93%) and Goldman Sachs (GS) 301.96 (-2.39%).

The VIX closed Wednesday at 19.22 (+7.49%) and the 10 YR at 4.944 (+0.94%). The VIX is currently at 19.08 (-0.73%). The 10YR is at 4.934 (+0.73%).

Weekly jobless claims totaled a seasonally adjusted 198,000 for the period ended Oct. 14, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That marked a decline of 13,000 from the previous week and was below the Dow Jones estimate for 210,000. It was the lowest weekly level since Jan. 21. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, totaled 1.734 million, up 29,000 from the previous week and higher than estimates for 1.698 million.

Today we get a speech from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who is expected to provide some guidance on where policymakers head from here.

U.S. futures are mostly higher, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended lower.

The national average price of gasoline is down one cent at $3.565 per gallon.
