Friday the Dow closed down -158.84 (-0.47%) at 33,507.50.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +1.09%.

The Dow stock winners Friday were led by Nike (NKE) 95.62 (+6.68%), Walgreens (WBA) 22.24 (+6.41%) and Dow (DOW) 51.56 (+1.24%).

The Dow stock losers Friday were led by Travelers (TRV) 163.31 (-2.57%), JPMorgan (JPM) 145.02 (-1.74%) and Walmart (WMT) 159.93 (-1.61%).

The VIX closed Friday at 17.52 (+1.04%) and the 10 YR at 4.568 (-0.50%). The VIX is currently at 18.40 (+5.02%). The 10YR is at 4.640 (+1.55%).

The Senate passed a continuing resolution with just hours to spare before a midnight deadline Saturday, which was then signed by President Joe Biden into law. The bill keeps the government open for 45 more days, an extended period that lawmakers can use to finalize funding legislation.

Investors will watch for economic data due Monday on purchasing and construction spending. Later in the week, attention will turn to a string of reports offering insight into the health of the labor market, including Friday’s all important monthly payrolls data.

In September the Dow was down -3.5%. Ouch!

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down three-tenths of a cent at $3.832 per gallon.

Nike (NKE) reported earnings on 9/28/23 after the market close with $0.94, beating estimates of $0.739 per share.
