Tuesday the Dow closed down 388.00 (-1.14%) at 33,618.88.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +1.42%.

Tuesday, (2) Dow stocks were up, none were at 52-week lows and none were at 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Tuesday were Amgen (AMGN) 269.04 (+0.82%) and Travelers (TRV) 167.96 (+0.07%).

The Dow stock losers Tuesday were led by Apple (AAPL) 171.96 (-2.34%), IBM (IBM) 143.24 (-2.21%), Honeywell (HON) 187.89 (-2.07%) and Salesforce (CRM) 202.49 (-1.87%).

The VIX closed Tuesday at 18.94 (+12.07%) and the 10 YR at 4.538 (-0.44%). The VIX is currently at 18.22 (-3.80%). The 10YR is at 4.499 (-1.29%).

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield falls, pulling back from its highest levels since 2007. The 2-year Treasury yield also fell from a recent multiyear high.

The Commerce Department reported Wednesday morning that orders for durable goods rose 0.2% in August. Estimates were for a decline of 0.5%.

The U.S. dollar index was near session highs at 106.349 in early trading Wednesday. That’s the highest level of the year going back to Nov. 30, 2022 when the index reached a high of 107.195. The dollar index is up 2.6% this month, headed for its best month since May when it gained 2.62%. If it closes the month up by more than 2.62%, it will be the best month since February when the index rose 2.72%. The dollar index is up 3.33% this quarter, or its best since the third quarter of 2022 when the index climbed 7.1%.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down six-tenths of a cent at $3.832 per gallon.
