The Dow stock winners Wednesday were led by Amgen (AMGN) 271.46 (+2.71%), UnitedHealth (UNH) 492.13 (+2.39%) and IBM (IBM) 149.83 (+2.26%).

The Dow stock losers Wednesday were led by Intel (INTC) 34.69 (-4.54%), Microsoft (MSFT) 320.77 (-2.40%) and Apple (AAPL) 175.49 (-2.00%).

The VIX closed Wednesday at 15.14 (+7.30%) and the 10 YR at 4.427 (+1.93%). The VIX is currently at 16.32 (+7.79%). The 10YR is at 4.465 (+2.81%).

Weekly jobless claims decreased by 20,000 to 201,000 for the week ending Sept. 16, much lower than the 225,000 claims expected by economists. It was the lowest volume of new unemployment claims since January. Continuing claims totaled 1.662 million, a drop of 21,000 and below the estimate for 1.692 million.

The 10-year Treasury yield hit 4.48%, its highest in more than 15 years.

Cisco (CSCO) fell 5% in premarket trading Thursday after the IT company announced it will acquire Splunk , a cybersecurity company, for $157 per share.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended lower.

The national average price of gasoline is down eight-tenths of a cent at $3.867 per gallon.
