The consumer price index, which measures costs across a broad variety of goods and services, rose a seasonally adjusted 0.6% for the month, and was up 3.7% from a year ago, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Wednesday. Economists were looking for respective increases of 0.6% and 3.6%. However, excluding volatile food and energy, core CPI increased 0.3% and 4.3% respectively, against estimates for 0.2% and 4.3%. Federal Reserve officials focus more on core as it provides a better indication of where inflation is heading over the long term.
Higher mortgage rates continue to take their toll on mortgage demand, especially for refinancing. Total mortgage application volume dropped 0.8% last week compared to the previous week. The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances, $726,200 or less, increased to 7.27% from 7.21%, with points increasing to 0.72 from 0.69, including the origination fee, for loans with a 20% down payment.
U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.
The national average price of gasoline is up 1.2 cents at $3.848 per gallon.
