The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to be down -88 points.

Monday the Dow closed up +87.13 (+0.25%) at 34,663.72.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +4.57%.

The Dow stock winners Monday were led by 3M (MMM) 107.89 (+1.55%), Intel (INTC) 38.59 (+1.53%) and Verizon (VZ) 33.94 (+1.31%).

The Dow stock losers Monday were led by Walgreens (WBA) 21.43 (-2.55%), Chevron (CVX) 163.76 (-2.06%) and Nike (NKE) 96.79 (-0.90%).

The VIX closed Monday at 13.80 (-0.29%) and the 10 YR at 4.284 (+0.71%). The VIX is currently at 14.23 (+3.12%). The 10YR is at 4.281 (0.00%).

Apple is slightly higher before the bell and ahead of the technology giant’s eagerly anticipated iPhone launch event beginning at 10 a.m. PST.

Oil prices rose Tuesday morning and weighed on stocks as investors worry about sticky inflation and slowing global economic activity. U.S. crude prices touched the highest point since November of last year. The ICE Brent crude last added 49 cents to $91.13 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 62 cents to $87.91.

The FDA has signed off on updated Covid-19 vaccines that target circulating variants in the US. Drug manufacturers Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech said the new vaccines are effective against EG.5, currently the dominant strain. A group of independent experts that advises the CDC on its vaccination decisions will now weigh the safety and effectiveness of the updated vaccines and make recommendations for their use. After the CDC signs off on those recommendations, the vaccines can be administered. Health experts anticipate the vaccines could become available within just a few days at certain pharmacies and doctor’s offices, pending their expected approval.

Tomorrow we get the consumer price index and Thursday the producer price index.

U.S. futures are lower, European stocks are mostly lower and Asian markets ended mostly lower.

The national average price of gasoline is up four-tenths of a cent at $3.836 per gallon.
